History of our lodge:
The idea to start a new lodge was conceived in the backyard of Frank Giacalone's home in the Boca Winds community. A few months prior, Frank and Bill Petraglia, another Boca Winds resident, met and realized that they had a few things in common, not only Brooklyn as their original hometown, but their love of their mutual Italian heritage. They both agreed that there were numerous Italian-Americans living in the West Boca Raton area who felt like them, that a part of their "Italian Lifestyle" was missing. Frank was a member and past-president of a Sons of Italy lodge in New York for many years. The solution was clear; start a lodge right here in West Boca Raton. Italian people throughout history are known for their fraternalism and generosity. What separates the Sons of Italy in America from other social groups is the fact that no other group can compare to its culture, customs, and contributions to society.
Who are the Order of the Sons of Italy in America:
- The Order of the Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) is the largest and oldest national organization for men and women of Italian heritage in the United States.
- Established in 1905 by Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro as a mutual aid society for the early Italian immigrants, today OSIA has more than 600,000 members and supporters and a network of more than 700 chapters coast to coast, making it the leading service and advocacy organization for the nations estimated 26 million people of Italian descent.
- Its missions include encouraging the study of Italian language and culture in American schools and universities; preserving Italian American traditions, culture, history and heritage; and promoting closer cultural relations between the United States and Italy.
- The Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) is a private, philanthropic institution, established by OSIA in 1959. To date, the SIF has given more than $93 million to scholarships, medical research, cultural preservation, disaster relief, and other projects.
- The Commission for Social Justice (CSJ) is the anti-defamation arm of the OSIA. The CSJ is committed to fighting racism, prejudice, and the stereotyping of all races, religions and cultures.
"Today I have a dream and hope that someday, even if it takes one hundred years before we are fully accepted, our children and their children's children, even if they carry a single drop of Italian blood, will be able and proud to continue to carry on our traditions, our culture and our language. It is up to us, and what we do today." -- Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro, OSIA Founder.
